description

Summary

Significance: The Wilcox Road Historic District possesses local significance as a concentrated collection of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century residential buildings in a rare, well-preserved rural coastal setting. Located on a point of land surrounded on three sides by water, the district contains a total of 39 buildings, 29 of which contribute to the historic character of the area. The contributing buildings date from between 1874 and ca. 1940. Also included in the district is a small cemetery that dates to the mid-eighteenth century and contains the remains of members of several local families, including the Miner family, whose patriarch, Thomas Minor, was one of the founders of Stonington. The period of significance for the district extends from 1760, the date of the oldest stone in the Miner Cemetery, to 1948. Most of the contributing buildings are associated with members of the locally-prominent Wilcox family and retain their historic architectural appearance to a high degree. The tracks of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) bisect the district near the southern tip of Quiambaug Neck and separate the residential area from the water.
