Winthrop College, Withers Building, Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, York County, SC

Significance: The Withers Building is architecturally significant for its fine Neo-Gothic design and is historically significant for its association with Winthrop College, one of the prime innovators in teaching methods and teacher training in the Southeast. Constructed of masonry, this E-shaped structure has a four-story tower, with the entrance at the base of the tower beneath a four-centered Tudor arch that is enriched with terra cotta molding and trim. The tower above the entrance is of brick laid in Flemish bond, with four octagonal turrets at the tower's corners. These turrets rise above the tower to terminate in concave copper covered, pyramidal roofs. Stepper parapets, also enriched with terra cotta, rise between the four turrets. The Withers Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 20, 1981.
