Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Brick Officers' Quarters, Types G & H, Area A, Dayton, Montgomery County, OH

description

Summary

Significance: The most prevalent building types in the Brick Quarters complex are the "G" and "H." These nearly identical detached or single company officers' quarters are the smallest of the group, consisting of 1,790 and 1,794 square feet respectively. They comprise 37 of the 78 structures (or 91 quarters accounting for doubles), approximately 40 percent of the total. This is somewhat unusual in that most military housing is of the duplex or double variety, which results in a savings in construction cost (due to the shared wall) and in land usage. In fact, single quarters were not originally planned here. Of the two types, "H" is the most commonly used, although both types vary only slightly in plan and exterior detail.
