Zeringue House, Hahnville Triangle, Hahnville, St. Charles Parish, LA
Summary
1988 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: The Zeringue House is a well-preserved Creole house from the period 1810-1820. Its form and relatively elegant Federal interior styling link it with the New Orleans culture sphere. The first recorded owner is Rosemont Troxler (1822-1880). His daughter, Josepha Troxler married Joseph Trisch. Their daughter, Beatrice Trisch sold the house to the present owners, J. Leonard and Paul Zeringue, ca. 1948. The house was enlarged in the 19th century by the addition of a single room on the west end. It originally served as a single-room schoolhouse, then as the office of the Harold, a local newspaper (1873 to present); it now functions as the kitchen. About 1938 the house was moved about 100 yards directly back from the riverbank to make room for the construction of a new levee.
