Zimmerscheidt-Leyendecker House, Frelsburg, Colorado County, TX

description

Summary

Significance: The Zimmerscheidt-Leyendecker House is located on a hill near the junction of Redgate Creek and the Frelsburg-Columbus Road that was part of a league granted to Frederick Adolph Zimmerscheidt in 1838. The cedar log portion with its stone-lined cellar was built in 1845, possibly by Albert Dietrich Heitman, and immigrant German cabinetmaker. In 1852 a sandstone infilled fachwerk addition was constructed along with other changes including raising of the ceiling of the log structure and the addition of a second floor room. ... The last full-time residents of the house were Fritz Leyendecker's daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Emil Brune. The Brunes died in the early 1970's, and the structure has since been preserved and used as a vacation house by their grandchildren.
