Bridges. Another bridge on the Norris freeway, designed as a continuous concrete structure, cantilevered past the abutments. The simplicity of TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) bridges contrasts with considerable detail and ornamentation on the standard types of most state highway departments. Photograph illustrates unspoiled rural character of surroundings which was attained by purchase of broad strips of land either side of road and, further contracts with abutting land owners giving them right to cultivate TVA-owned strip in exchange for prohibiting signboards on their own property

Maritime Commission opens bids for new combination passenger and cargo liner. Washington, D.C., April 1. Taking its first major step toward developing the American Merchant Fleet, the new federal maritime Commission opened bids today for the construction of a combination passenger and cargo liner to replace the S.S. Leviathan in Transatlantic service. The bids were submitted under the 1936 Merchant Marine Act which specifies that plans must include all the latest safety and National defense features. The War and Navy Departments have requested that the Leviathan be retained as a Military Auxiliary. In the photograph, left to right: Commissioner M.M. Civilian protection. This is another of the tasks for which civilian volunteer workers are trained. Their is the task of saving human life and they are equipped with the latest in equipment to make this vital task more efficient. Municipal fire and police departments will play a leading role in this training

Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas Island, Virgin Islands. The high school cadets are organized at the Charlotte Amalie high school to assist police and fire departments during blackouts and air-raids

Even sweepings are saved as the Nassau Smelting and Refining Company does its part to conserve defense materials. Gathered from railroad cars, truck, and operation departments, sweepings will be used to charge a blast furnace. The yield, pure copper, will be refined into wire bar to be rolled and drawn into telephone wire

Civilian defense. War Emergency Radio Service. These three War Emergency Radio Service transmitter-receivers tuned to different wave lengths keep this Civilian Defense control center in touch with three different channels of communication. The set being operated maintains contact with state and city police and fire departments. The other two are used for communicating with sub-control centers, hospitals, and mobile field units

Conservation. Used typewriter campaign. The War Production Board (WPB) has launched a campaign to secure 600,000 used typewriters from business firms and private individuals. These machines are needed by the Army, Navy, Maritime Commission, Board of Economic Warfare, Lend-Lease and other government departments and agencies. Don MacDonald, Washington, D.C. typewriter dealer, affixes a decalcomania on a machine turned in to the government by John Stockham, Washington, D.C. insurance man. This was one of the first typewriters thus enlisted in the war effort. The decalcomania reads: "Property of U.S. Government - severe penalties for unlawful use"

Production. Airplane manufacture, general. A production control clerk at North American Aviation's Inglewood, California, plant carries rush parts to various departments with a special luggage-carrying tricycle. This plant produces the battle-tested B-25 ("Billy Mitchell") bomber, used in General Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, and the P-51 ("Mustang") fighter plane, which was first brought into prominence by the British raid on Dieppe

A burner employs an acetyline torch effectively in cutting away metal on a sub-assembly operation. The burner department which renders service to other departments is in charge of much of this work. Women are often employed in this phase of the work

Senate Committee questions Inspector General of Army. Washington, D.C., Jan. 18. Maj. Gen. Walter Reed, Inspector General of the Army, takes the oath before testifying before the Senate Public Lands Committee. Questioned by the committee on the alleged defalcations totaling $87,000 of reno[...] Stitley, former Chief Voucher Clerk of the CCC, Reed declared the Army Chief Finance Office acted in good faith when the alleged fraudulent vouchers were honored. He added the finance officer was instructed to honor any and all vouchers presented by persons designated in communications between the Army and other government departments concerning handling of finances for the CCC, 1/18/38
