The Jacob's Ladder of Montenegro. Leading from the city of Cattaro to Cettinje is the great stone highway that winds its way up the mountain side making 27 turns before reaching the summit overlooking the bay. The distance direct is a mile, but by the road it is ten. It is over this highway that the American Red Cross hauls all its supplies from its bases at Teodo and Cattaro for interior points of Montenegro and Albania. The route is very dangerous at many points as the rustling hulks of trucks and cars at the bottom of the cliffs will testify

Bridges. Highway bridge near Soddy, Tennessee, where, in cooperation with work relief agencies and the governing body of the county, TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) developed an arm of Chickamauga Lake for recreational uses

Bridges. Highway bridge across an arm of Norris Lake which has been developed by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority), with local cooperation, for recreational uses. Note that, as on all TVA bridges where view is of importance, the parapet consists of a solid portion and an open rail to permit good view

Bridges. Bridge on Norris freeway which was built by TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) as construction road, and later turned over to the state as part of the highway system. The bridge is of reinforced concrete and is cantilevered on the land side of the foundations to meet the highway fill. Note, also, comments on K 4203

Filling and service stations are provided as necessary parts of employee villages. The one shown on this photograph pioneered in the United States the center location with respect to the two directions of highway traffic which eliminates the need for cars turning out of line to reach the pumps, this layout being particularly advantageous on high-speed through highways

Hiwassee Dam and powerhouse. General view downstream. This dam, about 307 feet high, closes a deep canyon in a scenically outstanding section of the North Carolina Mountains. Keynote of design is extreme simplicity. Highway is carried across top of dam

Demountable employee housing. Three-bedroom war workers' house constructed in five slices. On this project, where the houses went into an existing community in Alabama to provide housing for employees of chemical and metallurgical industries of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority), the local desire for traditional appearance was accommodated by the use of a pitched roof. Each side of the roof is hinged at the eaves and is laid down, during transport, over the ceiling to bring overall height within normal highway clearances

The bridge is of reinforced concrete and is cantilevered on the land side of the foundations to meet the highway fill. Note, also, comments on K 4203

Another view of Cove Lake State Park with the inn in the foreground and some of the tourists' cabins in the back. Located on a main highway, both a restaurant and overnight cabins fill an important need of the tourist traffic which, in turn, is important to the valley. In addition, it has become a favorite point for local recreation. The standards of space layout, finish, furnishings, and service have performed as models for this area of the valley
