Government insured loans a 'desirable first step' says Jerome Frank of S.E.C. Washington, D.C., June 2. SEC Chairman Jerome Frank making his initial appearance before a Senate Committee since his advancement to the Chairmanship, today appeared as witness before the Senate Banking and Currency Committee to endorse government insured loans as a 'desirable first step toward enabling local banking institutions to fill a gap in the financing of small business.' The bill was proposed by Sen. James E. Mead, and proposes that the RFC insure up to 90 percent of the loans made by private banking institutions

U.S. official charges American Student Union is communist. Washington, D.C., Nov. 27. Major Hampden Wilson of the U.S. Veterans Administration, today told the Dies Committee that the American Student Union is the vehicle for the spread of communism in the American school system. Wilson gave a summary of his findings from an eight month study of communistic influences in 50 educational institutions in 42 states

Important changes in the Government's vast social security program received consideration today by two groups of officials and laymen. The advisory counsel, created at request of a Senate Committee, heard reports from experts who have surveyed the possible extension of old age benefits to agricultural workers, domestic servants and employees of religious and charitable institutions, snapped while attending the meeting were left to right: T.L. Involuntary unemployment dangerous to public health. U.S. Surgeon General. Washington, D.C., March 16. Appearing before the Senate Unemployment and Relief Committee today, U.S. Surgeon General Thomas Parran declared that involuntary unemployment "breeds pathological political philosophies, subversive to our present democratic institutions". Speaking as a doctor and not as an economist, Dr. Parran urged that employment be provided for all who are willing and able to work. Idle hands are dangerous to public health, Dr. Parran indicated in his statement, 3/16/38

Labor Relations boards necessary, mayors conference told. Washington, D.C., Nov. 16. William H. Davis, Chairman of the New York State Mediation Board, told the U.S. Mayors Conference today that through such institutions as Labor Relations Boards and the gradual development of procedure under them, liberty of individual action is reconciled with general welfare.
