Trinidad, Colorado is one of many U.S. cities that have illuminated signs high about their communities, but this one is more than a sign. Locals call it "Simpson's Rest." Buried up on the sandstone bluff is George S. Simpson, who was a legendary scout, trader, and prominent citizen in the mid-1800s. As the story goes, Simpson was under attack from Ute Indians but managed to hide for days, undiscovered, in the craggy hillside. He wrote a poem about the experience and requested that he be buried on the bluff. The request was granted in 1885
