Says all the children learn to spin that way. Ollie said: "I have kep up 3 sides for Annie." Sister Annie's Bible record says 12 years old last February. Has a steady job here; runs 4 sides. Mother said Annie learned to spin at Pell City Mill before she was 12, and thought it was all right. Their step-father said: "I'm so porely, thinkin of movin where the climate is better." Groups of workers in Clayton (N.C.) Cotton Mills. Every one went into work when the whistle blew, and I saw most of them at work during the morning when I went through. Mr. W.H. Swift talked with a boy recently who said he was ten years old and works in the Clayton Cotton Mill--also that others the same age worked. Here they are. I couldn't get the youngest girls in the photos. Clayton is but a short ride from the State Capitol. (The Superintendent watched the photographing without comment.) Charlie and Ollie Allen. Been working in Harriet Cotton Mills 2 years. Charlie is probably of age, but Ollie is a violation according to both his brother and life insurance policy which say he is 12 years old now. These statements are based on the parents' statement, which is probably high. He appears to be 10 years old, and has been working 2 years. His father and older brother are in the mill. Home and fruit stand of the Cavicchio family. 64 Bedford Street. Somerville, Massachusetts. Both the mother and Mary, 10 years old, worked off and on all day out here with the soot from the passing engines dropping so fast it had to be shaken off.
