Chesapeake and Ohio to get control of Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad. Washington, D.C., May 14. Carroll M. Shanks, Chairman of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad Mortgage Bondholders Protective Committee, told the Senate Railroad Financing Committee today that the proposed reorganization plan for the C.&E.I now pending on federal courts would give the control to the Chesapeake and Ohio. The Senate Committee has been investigating the $700,000 load procured by the C.&E.I from the Midland Bank of Cleveland. Later testimony brought out at the hearing proved that the Chesapeake and Ohio actually made the loan with the bank acting as the road's agent, 5/14/1937

He couldn't find a plot of ground in the crowded capital, so he used his newly acquired congressional influence and won permission to help tend flowers and shrubbery in the government's Botanical Gardens. Visits FDR [Franklin Delano Roosevelt] ... and resigns. Francis Biddle, until today (Friday) Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, is seen here as he was about to enter the White House for a conference with Pres. Roosevelt. Following the visit it was announced that Biddle had formally submitted his resignation on the N.I.R. Board. The N.I.R.B. will itself go out of existence next month. Personal reasons, and a desire to return to the practice of law were given as cause for the retirement. Biddle's name has lately been linked with new possibilities of appointment, perhaps to foreign service, 7/5/35
