Tennessee Valley Authority production. Elemental phosphorus. A stack in the TVA phosphoric acid plant in the Muscle Shoals area. Phosphoric acid is produced in conjunction with the making of elemental phosphorus. The phosphorus, used in the manufacture of incendiary bombs and shells and of material for "smoke," is produced by smelting phosphate rock, coke and silica together in electric furnaces and condensing the resulting phosphorus gases. When surplus phosphorus is available it is converted into highly concentrated phosphatic fertilizer, much of which is shipped abroad under provisions of the Lend-Lease Bill

Conservation. Glass gauges replacing steel. Markings on the handles of new glass gauges, which replace steel gauges at the Frankford Arsenal, are produced by acid etching. Glass gauges are lighter and cheaper than steel, permit greater visibility in inspection, are not as much affected by room temperatures and heat of operators' hands, are not corroded by perspiration, need no protection against rusting, do not acquire burrs that would change the effective sizes. They can save the annual of 250 tons of critical tool steel in government arsenals alone

Lowly corn cob has many uses. Thanks to successful experiments of the Department of Agriculture, corn cobs can now be made into many valuable by-products. Dr. W.W. Skinner is shown pointing to a block of heat insulating material made from corn cob. Next to the corn cob are samples of by-products, including furfural, lignin, ethyl alcohol, cellulose, xylose, adhesive, acetic acid, glucose, carbon and a printing plate made from phenol-furfural resin. In front of the cob are skeins of rayon dyed with colors made from lignin of the corn cob, 11/20/30

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Analyzing the amount of copper and lead in the brasses. In this test the laboratory checks samples of brass from the mill's production to make sure they are the correct mixture. Samples are dissolved in acid and subsequently electrolyzed. The copper is plated out on the cathode negative electrode and the lead on the anode positive electrode. The percentages of each metal present are determined by weighing the electrodes before and after electrolyzing. Chase and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Pickling lengths of copper water tube in a brass and copper mill. After annealing, or softening by heat to reduce brittleness and allow further drawing, tubes are "pickled" in a sulphuric acid solution to remove oxide and scale that result from the anneal. Bundles of the tubes are picked up by electric cranes and transported from the pickle to a rinse bath of water. The tubes are then returned to the drawbench for re-drawing down to smaller diameters. Production. Aircraft. Samples for microscope inspection--a lowly rivet, a screw, an extruded part--prepared by a test engineer in a large Western aircraft plant. Samples are embedded in bakelite, polished to mirror finish, then etched with acid to bring out the grain. A faulty grain structure, as revealed through the microscope, will show up low-grade material or faulty processing methods in the manufacture of the part

Conservation. Glass gauges replacing steel. Markings on the handles of the new glass gauges, which replace steel gauges in the Frankford Arsenal, are produced by acid etching as shown on the attached labels. Glass gauges are lighter and cheaper than steel, permit greater visibility in inspection, are not as much affected by room temperatures and heat of operators' hands, are not corroded by perspiration, need no protection against rusting, do not acquire burrs that would change the effective sizes. They can save the annual use of 250 tons of critical tool steel in government arsenals alone

Circleville, Ohio's "Hooverville" (see general caption). Begins to talk: "No man in the United States had the trouble I had since 1931. No man. Don't talk to me. I'm deaf. I lost my farm in 1931. I went to work in an acid factory. I got acid spilt on me; burnt my nose and made me blind. Then I get those awful headaches. I've been to lots of doctors, but that doesn't help me. They come on at sundown. No man in the United States had the trouble I had since 1931." (This last repeated many times through his talking.) "No man. It must be getting on to 6 o'clock now. My head's beginning to pain."
