Sacramento Pit copper mine at Bisbee, Arizona. This is a pit 435 feet deep. In 1911 a shaft was sunk into the slopes of the east wall. In 1917 a dynamite charge blew off the top rock of the crown and dredges were worked to excavate the pit's ore bodies. By 1931 the pit floor was too narrow for dredges to work in. The ore was taken out by caving in the walls into the lower mine levels. Between 1917 and 1931 the mine, which covers thity-five acres, yielded 20,843,667 tons of ore. The mine is today abandoned. Frank H. Shurtleff hanging the bucket on the spout while tapping sugar maple tree for gathering sap to make syrup. The Shurtleff farm has about 400 acres and was originally purchased by grandfather in 1840. He raises sheep, cows, cuts lumber and has been making maple syrup for about thirty-five years. Sugaring brings about one thousand dollars annually. Because of the deep snow this year he only tapped 1000 of his 2000 trees. He expects to make about 300 to 500 gallons this year. After the plates are hot-rolled and released, they pass through the roller leveling device at the right, where they are flattened for commercial use

The Yelverton Family. Ten in the family. Live in a six-room house, "The only one on the street," they told me repeatedly. Two years ago the came here from the farm fifty miles away and a mile from the R.R. where they owned 135 acres. Father and four oldest boys have been working in the Laurel Cotton Mills for two years. Father said, "the little girls don't work, an' we're not goin' to let 'em if we can help it. We'll send 'em to school an' make ladies out of em. I don't reckon we'll ever go back to the farm. They all like the mill work. It's light work, but not very healthy though." The boys said, "We'd ruther work in the mill, It's easier. No hot sun an' no cold in winter 'cause they heat the mill then." The two youngest boys, eleven and thirteen years old, the father said, have been in the mill two years, and have had almost no schooling, and no likelihood of getting any more. The mother said, "I don't like to live in the city near so well. We're more shut in, an' we can't give the boys the schoolin' they ought to have 'cause they've got to work in the mill (wages is so low). We haven't been so well as on the farm." Location: Laurel, Mississippi.
