U.S. Negro troops on way to Liberia. As a U.S. Army transport plows through the Atlantic on its way to Liberia, Africa, the Negro crew of a 37mm anti-aircraft gun holds a shipboard practice session. The soldiers, members of a U.S. Army Engineer's unit, were especially interested in Liberia, a Negro Republic founded by their ancestors whose governmental system is patterned on that of the U.S.

Congress urged to remove tomahawk-swinging Indian statue from steps of Capitol. Washington, D.C., April 27. If Rep. Usher Burdick, Republican of North Dakota has his way, the 87 year old statue standing on the steps of the Capitol which depicts a frontiersman rescuing a white woman from a possible redskin tomahawking will 'be ground into the dust and scattered to the four winds.' Introducing a resolution in the House to that effect, the legislator said, ' the American Indian was no worse than some of our own ancestors, and there is no more reason to memorialize his misdeeds than there would be to set up a monument to the witch burners of Salem'

Manpower. Americans all. Operating a low-swing engine lathe, Joe Zorich (left) and Chuck Doe, both nineteen, are typical of the younger workers in this huge Midwest medium-tank factory. Both are first-generation Americans--Joe's parents came from Croatia and Chuck's from Germany--and both are just about as American as any nineteen-year-old who can count his American-born ancestors on both hands. Machining parts for the tanks American soldiers will use to defeat the Axis, they're marking time till they can be on the front lines themselves, using these very tanks to make a first-hand stab at Hitler's hordes.
