By a vote of 11-12, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today shelved the consideration of neutrality legislation until next term of Congress. By defeating the Pittman Resolution, they dashed the administration's hopes for repealing the arms embargo. Gillette vigorously denied that he voted as he did simply to take revenge for the president's attempt to defeat him at the last election. Both Senator Walter George, left, and Guy Gillette, right, have been in the center of a question mark since it became known that the committee would vote on neutrality legislation today. John, Manuel's brother (next to him in photo) works in City Cotton Mill. Next is sister. At left of end is cousin. Small fry sprinkled around. All are very illiterate. John and Manuel are the only ones who can speak English and they only a little.  Location: New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Slovenly kitchen living-room of family of Alfred Benoit, 191 N. Front St., a sweeper in Bennett Mill; has been there for two months. Mother works in the same mill; father is a canvasser (and shiftless). Said, "I'm de father of 11 children." The baby in the girl's arms is one they are keeping for another woman. The mother would not get in the photo. Alfred had bad eyes this morning (influenza apparently) and mop[p]ing them with a filthy rag. One of the little ones had the same trouble. Another had a boil on his face.  Location: New Bedford, Massachusetts.
