[Family of W.T. Frakes, Route 5, Lawton, Okla. Mother said 6-year old Warren picked 41 pounds of cotton yesterday "An I don't make him pick; he picked last year." Had about 20 pounds in his bag. She said Clara, 11 years old, averages 75 pounds a day. Picked 101 pounds yesterday, earning $1.25 (they are picking now for another farmer). She carries 40 pounds in the bag. Velma, 14 years, picks 125 pounds. Has picked over 200 pounds in a day. Children go to Flower Mound School, District 48 while living here, but they are itinerant, renting a small farm of 10 acres now. Freddie Kafer, a very immature little newsie selling Saturday Evening Posts and newspapers at the entrance to the State Capitol. He did not know his age, nor much of anything else. He was said to be 5 or 6 years old. Nearby, I found Jack who said he was 8 years old, and who was carrying a bag full of Saturday Evening Posts, which weighed nearly 1/2 of his own weight. The bag weighed 24 pounds, and he weighed only 55 pounds. He carried this bag for several blocks to the car. Said he was taking them home.  Sacramento, California / Lewis W. Hine.

He carries the sandbag before his face to protect him from the molten magnesium sizzling forth like fat from a frying pan. He will drop the whole bag on the bomb, and the heat of the bomb will burn through the burlap, releasing the sand. The sand will then run onto and around the bomb.

Fitting the outstretched fingers of a fabric patch to the side of a barrage balloon, this worker must be extremely careful to put the patch on smoothly. Any wrinkles might bind, pinch or chafe and cause leaks. Sewn and seamed inside this "glove" is a webbing of rope which will become part of the rigging which controls the giant balloon as it flies thousands of feet above cities, arsenals, or other bomber objectives.
