Navy gets original commission of John Paul Jones. Washington, D.C., March 12. The orginal commission of John Paul Jones, as captian in the United States Navy, dated October 10, 1776, and issued under authority of the Continental Congress with signature of John Hancock as its president was presented to the Secretary of Navy Charles Edison today. Capt. H.A. Baldridge, U.S.N. retired, curator of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, presented the valuable document to the secretary on behalf of the owner, John L. Senior of Glen Acres, Roxbury, Conn. who was not able to be present. The commission will be placed in the crypt of the Revolutionary War hero at the Naval Academy. Left to right: Admiral H.R. Gardenor, Detroit Times Reporter, told the House Committee investigating Un-American affairs. Students at the Michigan State Agricultural College at East Lansing entered the picture Gardener said, when Union pickets attempted to close restaurants. The pickets, acting on behalf of the local automobile workers union, had declared a labor holiday in protest against the Sheriff's arrest of eight persons who had been picketing a trecking company, 10/22/38

Wallace, right, presenting the Meyer Medal for distinguished services in plant introduction to David Fairchild, Veteran Plant Explorer of the United States Department of Agriculture. Virginia Governor consoles rejected nominee for Virginia federal judgeship. Washington, D.C., Feb. 2. Floyd Roberts, whose nomination by President Roosevelt to be a Federal Judge in Virginia, was adversely reported by the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, shown with Governor James H. Price of Virginia. Governor Price was to have testified in behalf of Roberts but the Committee went into executive session without calling him. Ickes denies wire tapping by his investigators. Washington, D.C., Jan. 11. Secretary of the Interior Ickes denied before the Senate Public Lands Committee that this department investigators had tapped telephone wires of any Senator or Representative. Ickes, testifying on behalf of Ebert K. Burlew, nominee for Asst. Sec. of the Interior, was questioned by Sen. Key Pittman of Nevada in regard to "rumors" of a secret investigation of an unidentified Congressman. "It is not true, and it has never been true as far as I know" Ickes said.
