"Hands off the court" Representative before Senate Judiciary Committee. Washington, D.C., April 22. Representing the Women's National Committee for "Hands off the Supreme Court," Catherine Curtis appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee today to oppose the bill. Saying she thought she could speak for the American Women, Miss Curtis declared that when any group in this country seeks to nullify the safeguards which our Supreme Court provides, our American Women will stand united in defending for themselves and their families the sacred rights guaranteed them by the consititution through an independent Judiciary, 4/22/1937

A Negro worker tending an electric phosphate smelting furnace which is producing elemental phosphorus at a TVA chemical plant in the Muscle Shoals area. The phosphorus, used in the manufacture of incendiary bombs and shells and of material for "smoke," is produced by smelting phosphate rock, coke and silica together in the electric furnaces and condensing the resulting phosphorus gases. When surplus phosphorus is available it is converted into highly concentrated phosphate fertilizer, much of which is shipped abroad under provisions of the Lend-Lease Bill

In addition,' he said, '60 percent of all the National Farm Loan Associations have had their capitol so impaired that they cannot make new loans. Beyond question there is room for improvement in both the general farm credit situation and the Federal Land Bank System'

Senate Committee told million railroad employees back Crosser-Wagner Pension Bill. Washington, D.C., May 15. Appearing as the first witness in favor of the Crosser-Wagner Railroad Pension Bill, George M. Harrison, President of the Railway Clerks Association and Chairman of the Railway Labor Executives Association, today told the house Interstate Commerce Committee that 1,500,000 railroad employees favor this new bill which if passed, will replace the present Railroad Retirement Act. Harrison added there was "no doubt of its constitutionality" and that it had been worked out with railroad managements on the understanding that it would not be attacked in courts by them.
