Mr. Smith, overseer in Wylie Mill, Chester, S.C. He will not let his children work in the mill. Says it is no place for them. Plenty of children below 12 in his mill. He said that it is a common practice all through the South for employers in cotton mills to evade the child labor law by allowing young children to help their older sisters or brothers. [Case of Frank Wiegel, 3916 - # Ave., Brooklyn N.Y., injured after working 18 hours a day. He was injured at 1:55 A.M. January 18, 1914. Age 15 years. Employed by the Henry Bosch Paper Co., makers of wallpaper sample books. On Saturday, or rather Sunday morning at 1:55, Frank must have fallen asleep and in some way he knocked against the controlling pedal, and the next thing he knew his hand was caught in the machine. He sued the Co. for damages and after 2 years' litigation he received an award of $10,000 - $5,000 for each of 2 fingers which were amputated. $2,500,000 in rare books acquired for Folger Library. Washington, D.C., May 14. The Folger Shakespeare Library, here, will soon place on it's shelves 9,000 volumes, onced valued at $2,500,000 and containing 787 books by early English authors, only one copy of each of which is known to exist. The 9,000 books were printed in England up to the end of 1640, roughly from the reign of Henry the 8th to the Cromwell Revolt, a period preceding and following Shakespeare. They deal largely with historical and religious subjects. The books were purchased from Lady Harmsworth, widow of the collector by President Stanley King, of Amherst College, the trustees of which administer the Folger Library. Dr. Giles E.
