The only school near the Cotton Mills, Winona, Miss. A private school taught by Miss. McIntosh, who for several years off and on has conducted it, charging each pupil only one dollar a month. With only ten pupils now the job is not very lucrative. She said it was discouraging, but that many seemed to appreciate it. "What we need is compulsory education and a free school out here, which we may get before long." Children range from six to ten years. One of the ten year old boys said, "Only two more years and I'll be in the mill." Little girls added, "Four years more and I'll be there." They all seemed to feel they would get into the mill as soon as possible. Location: Winona, Mississippi.

War production drive poster. "Give 'Em Both Barrels, Boys." One of the huge posters which employees of the Northern Pump Company, of Minneapolis, place on the sides of freight cars leaving the plant. The ideas originated with the men themselves. In this way the labor-management committee broadcasts to the countryside its resolve to help win the war. It is estimated that millions of Americans see these traveling posters as they move across the country to their destinations

"Dinner-Toters" waiting for the gate to open. This is carried on more in Columbus than in any other city I know, and by smaller children. (See photos.) Many of them are paid by the week for doing it, and carry, sometimes, ren i.e., ten or more a day. They go around in the mill, often help tend to machines, which often run at noon, and so learn the work. A teacher told me the mothers expect the children to learn this way, long before they are of proper age. (See also Vaughn's Georgia Report, April, 1913.) Eagle and Phoenix Mill. One, Charlie Lott was thirteen years old according to Family Record, another Norman Vaughn apparently twelve years old was under legal age according to one of the other boys there, Calvin Caughlin who did not appear to be fifteen years old himself. These and two girls that I proved to be under legal age were all working in this small mill.
