Bankers' Association opposes federal insured loans as hazard to established businesses. Washington, D.C., June 15. Robert M. Hanes, 1st Vice President of the American Bankers' Association, and brother of Treasury Undersecretary John W. Hanes, today told the Senate Banking and Currency Committee that the Association opposed the proposed bill to authorize the RFC to insure up to 90 percent on loans to small businesses. He said that it would be a hazard to already established enterprises. He denied that bankers are 'sitting idly by waiting for the borrowers to seek credit'

Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. Mrs. B.J. Rogan receives deliveries of laundry, ice and grocery items from local businesses that serve the defense trailer camp twice daily. Mrs. Rogan's husband is employed by the General Electric Company as a drill press operator or defense work. Although grocery stores and milk companies deliver to the doors of the trailer town, agents, salesmen and canvassers are forbidden in the settlement. De Land pool. Babcock airplane plant. Interior of the Babcock plant at De Land, Florida. When the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, this was a dormant airplane plant. It was revived as a community project. Businessmen of De Land pooled their machines and resources, used this plant as a prime contractor to obtain war work, and now are producing over two-million dollars worth of war equipment in it. These motor repair racks, being turned out on a production schedule engineers termed "impossible" two months ago, are being built by former clerks, auto-mechanics and small shop operators who were caught by the impact of the war on their peacetime businesses

Arthur Whitside, President of Dun & Bradstreet of New York City, told the Monopoly Committee today that small businesses were the 'stabilizers' in the nation's economy because they could readily change their financial structure to meet conditions. 'Sound economy,' he said, 'is utterly impossible unless a man can go into business with a little money.' He defined 'small business' as one being worth from $25,000 to $75,000
