Durward Nickerson, Western Union messenger #55. One of the by-products of messenger work. Lives in Bessemer, R.F.D. #1. Saturday night, September 26, 1914, he took investigator through the old Red Light on Ave. A, pointed out the various resorts, told him about the inmates he has known there. Only a half dozen of them were open now, and those very quietly. Durward has put in 2 years in the messenger work and shows the result of temptations open to him. He has recently returned from a hobo trip through 25 states. He was not inclined to tell much about the shady side of messenger work, but one could easily see that he has been through much that he might have avoided in a profitable kind of work. 18 years old. See Alabama report. Location: Birmingham, Alabama.

The Virginia K. Johnson Home. (A House of Refuge for Unmarried Mothers under twenty-one years old.) A large proportion of the girls here came from the farms, their lives stunted by the monotonous work of cotton picking, many of them beginning at five and six years old. Surely this must be counted one of the by-products of such deadening work. See Hine report on Texas Child Labor. Location: Dallas, Texas.

Lowly corn cob has many uses. Thanks to successful experiments of the Department of Agriculture, corn cobs can now be made into many valuable by-products. Dr. W.W. Skinner is shown pointing to a block of heat insulating material made from corn cob. Next to the corn cob are samples of by-products, including furfural, lignin, ethyl alcohol, cellulose, xylose, adhesive, acetic acid, glucose, carbon and a printing plate made from phenol-furfural resin. In front of the cob are skeins of rayon dyed with colors made from lignin of the corn cob, 11/20/30

General planning. This is a photograph of a display panel typical of the manner in which the Authority puts its case for comprehensive planning before the public. Explanatory material is placed at all powerhouse reception rooms, visitors' buildings and other public contact points. The increased understanding of natural resources, the techniques for their utilization and general planning for human welfare are considered valuable by-products of the Authority's program in themselves
