New process expected to revolutionize map making. Washington, D.C., March 21. A new machine just designed and perfected by John Braund, Cartographer for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, by which relief maps can be made showing all the details of topography in a form true to nature, is expected to revolutionize map making. Instead of compressed paper or cardboard, Braund uses a thin metal on which he prints the map, and, then hammers out the topography with a specially-designed electric hammer. Maps made by this process can be quickly understood and accurately read by even the untrained map reader. Braund said the new machine would be of untold value to armies in field in war time. 3-21-39

Government cartographer develops new process for making relief maps. Washington, D.C., Jan. 13. Through a process just perfected by John Braund, Cartographer for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, relief maps can now be made showing all the details of topography in a form true to nature and which can be quickly understood and accurately read by even the untrained map reader. Instead of compressed paper or cardboard, Braund uses thin metal on which he has printed the map desired. He then hammers out the typography with a special electric hammer he has designed. Braund says this new method has proved more speedier, efficient, and costs less to make than maps, 1/13/39

Production. Milling machines and machine castings. Many minds, many heads, many skills went into the construction of this large, hydraulically-operated milling machine. The slender shaft just below the figure "100" in the upper right is a tracer finger, so called because it feels its way gently around the edge of a pattern so that the cutters reproduce the pattern exactly in tough steel. This tracer, so sensitive that it can be deflected with the edge of a piece of cardboard, controls the movement of tons of machinery exerting fifteen or twenty horsepower of cutting force

Air raid protection--what to do in your home. If you plan to use the cellar during air raids it is a good idea to put heavy paint on the windows. Flat black paint is best but if you put enough coats of any color on, it will keep the light from coming through. It is also well (and not shown in this picture) to use cardboard to shade the light and keep it from shining directly on the windows; the kind of cardboard that comes in shirts from the laundry is light-proof, but a little heavier kind will keep the glass splinters from flying if there is a nearby burst
