10 per cent railroad rate increase benefits motor carriers--ICC Commissioner Eastman. Washington, D.C., April 13. ICC Commissioner Joseph B. Eastman today told a Senate Interstate Commerce Subcommittee that he believed the 10 per cent rate increase granted the railroads last summer has been "Of more benefit to the motor carriers than to the railroads." Advocating a balanced system of transportation charges between rail, motor and water carriers, Eastman said that contrary to popular belief, rate wars between the three do not benefit the public, 4-13-39

Senate Interstate Commerce Committee opens hearings today on transportation. Washington, D.C., April 3. The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee got off today for a series of hearings on public transportation problems, but the news value was considerably overshadowed by the appearance of Robert Montgomery in another committee at the same time. Carl R. Gray, Chairman of the president's committee of six on railroads, told the Committee that his group felt that an independent transportation board is needed to regulate all transportation, the board to be outside of the ICC jurisdiction. Gray urged that the federal board which he proposed handle water carriers as part of its duties. 4-3- 39

Present rail wage same as in 1920 when under government control, fact finding committee told. Washington, D.C., Oct. 8. Present railroad wages are on approximately the same level as in 1920 when the roads were controlled by the government, Bert M. Jewell, President of the A.F. of L.'s railway employees, told President Roosevelt's fact finding board today. He contended that because railroad workers have made "little or no progress" in improving their wages rates since then, they should now be called upon to accept the 15 percent reduction demanded by the carriers, 10/8/38

America's youth builds and flies model planes on miniature flying fields. Two American boys give their giant model plane a running start at Kelly Field in the city of San Antonio in the southwestern U.S. state of Texas where members of the Gas Model Club do their weekly flying. The plane, which weighs eleven pounds, has a thirteen feet (3.9 meters) wing spread, and a wing area of twenty-four square feet (2.2 square meters) The plane will not take off by itself, but with a running start flies very successfully. When the U.S. government in 1941 called on model plane builders to turn out 800,000 scale model airplanes for use by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, and civilian defense groups to train military and civilian personnel to recognize hostile and friendly aircraft, it was estimated that there were nearly three million American youths actively interested in aero-modeling. These young model builders put their experience to practical use by turning out models of fighters, scouts, fighter bombers, bombers, torpedo carriers, and commercial planes of the United Nations and of the enemy
