Brawley, Imperial Valley. In Farm Security Administration (FSA) migratory labor camp. Family of mother, father and eleven children, originally from near Mangrum, Oklahoma, where he had been tenant farmer. Came to California in 1936 after the drought. Since then has been traveling from crop to crop in California, following the harvest. Six of the eleven children attend school wherever the family stops long enough. Five older children work along with the father and mother. February 23, two of the family have been lucky and "got a place" (a day's work) in the peas on the Sinclair ranch. Father had earned about one dollar and seventy-three cents for ten-hour day. Oldest daughter had earned one dollar and twenty-five cents. Form these earnings had to provide their transportation to the fields twenty miles away. Mother wants to return to Oklahoma, father unwilling. She says, "I want to go back to where we can live happym live decent, and grow what we eat." He says, "We can't go the way I am now. We've got nothing in the world to farm with. I made my mistake when I came out here."

Calipatria, Imperial Valley, In Farm Security Administration (FSA) emergency migratory labor camp. Daughter of ex-tenant farmers on thirds and fourths in cotton. Had fifty dollars when set out. Went to Phoenix, picked cotton, pulled bolls made eighty cents a day with two people pulling bolls. Stayed until school closed. Went to Idaho, picked peas until August. Left McCall with forty dollars "in hand." Went to Cedar City and Parowan, Utah, a distance of 700 miles. Picked peas through September. Went to Hollister, California. Picked peas through October. Left Hollister for Calipatria for early peas which froze. Now receiving Farm Security Administration food grant and waiting for work to begin. "Back in Oklahoma, we are sinking. You work your head off for a crop and then see it burn up. You live in debts that you can never get out of. This isn't a good life, but I say that it's a better life than it was."

Only other work there is fifty cents a day wages and the farmers can't pay it anyways." One of these families has lost two babies since they left their home in Oklahoma. The "water company" was formed by the people in abandoned mining town of Jere, West Virginia, after the coal company cut off all public services because they were abandoning the mine. The coal company used to charge one dollar and twenty-cove cents per month for water. The present "people's" water company charges its members twenty-five cents per month and makes money at that even when everyone can't pay dues. There are dividends of flour, sugar, lard, etc. The lock is necessary to keep people from other camps from stealing the water, which is very scarce. It's still necessary to change the lock about every four months

West Mine, West Frankfort, Illinois. Now abandoned. This mine has been down about a year. General caption: Many of the miners displaced by machinery in the larger mines are left stranded after mines are abandoned; have opened shallow primitive workings on the coal seam where it occurs close to the surface. The output of these shallow mines, known locally as gopher holes, is processed by a crude method and sold to truckers at about half the price of deep-vein coal. Many of the gopher holes have no storage in the tipple, and the miners underground are idle when no truck is waiting at the chute to load coal. Wages of gopher hole miners run from seventy-five cents to five dollars per day, and many miners earn less than WPA (Works Progress Administration) workers. Some of the larger gopher holes, such as Blue Ribbon Number 2 at Spillertown, Williamson County, are better equipped, pay better wages, and produce as high as 40,000 tons a year

Migrant camp, Weslaco, Texas. Local employment men say that there was no need for migrant labor to handle the citrus and vegetable crops in the valley, the local supply of labor being ample for this purpose. Most of the local labor is Mexican and the labor contractors favor Mexican labor over white labor, partly because the Mexican will work much cheaper than whites. One white woman who was a permanent resident (her husband was on WPA (Works Progress Administration/Work Projects Administration) said that the white people who lived in the valley, had no trouble with the Mexicans. The Mexicans were good neighbors, she said, always willing to share what they had. She said the white migrants who came into the valley and resented and misunderstood the Mexicans caused the trouble between the two races. Some towns in this section permit camping only in trailers. The charge for camping in tents is about fifty cents per week, including water, which in some cases must be carried four city blocks. Privies are tin, very bad condition. Garbage is collected only once a week, with large dumps of decaying fruits and vegetables scattered among the camps. Some of the white migrants in this camp were very suspicious of governmental activity, due to the use by south Texas newspapers of the term "concentration camps" referring to FSA (Farm Security Administration) camps

Three related drought refugee families stalled on the highway near Lordsburg, New Mexico. From farms near Claremore, Oklahoma. Have been working as migratory workers in Calfornia and Arizona, now trying to get to Roswell, New Mexico, for work chopping cotton. Have car trouble and pulled up alongside the highway. "Would go back to Oklahoma but can't get along there. Can't feed the kids on what they give you (relief budget) and ain't made a crop there you might say for five years. Only other work there is fifty cents a day wages and the farmers can't pay it anyways." One of these families has lost two babies since they left their home in Oklahoma. The children, seventeen months and three years, died in the county hospital at Shafter California, from typhoid fever, resulting from unsanitary conditions in a labor camp

In Farm Security Administration (FSA) migratory labor camp. Family, mother, father and eleven children, originally from Oklahoma, where he had been a tenant farmer. Came to California in 1936 after drought. Since then have been traveling from crop to crop in California following the harvest. Six of the children attend school wherever the family stops long enough with mother and father. February 23, two of the family had been lucky and "got a place" (a day's work) in the peas on the Sinclair Ranch. Father had earned one dollar and seventy-three cents for ten hours a day. Oldest daughter had earned one dollar and twenty-five cents. From these earnings had to provide transportation to the fields twenty miles away. Mother wants to return to Oklahoma, father unwilling. She says, "I want to go back home where we can live happy, live decent, and grow what we eat." Brawley, Imperial Valley, California
