First Roman Catholic priest to be named U.S. Chief of Catholics. Washington, D.C., Dec. 23. Col. William R. Arnold today became U.S. Chief of Chaplains. The first Roman Catholic priest ever named to this post in the Army. He is a Native of Wooster, Ohio and was ordained a priest on June 8, 1908. He was appointed a Chaplain in the Army on May 7, 1913, with the rank of First Lieutenant, 12/23/37
