Dangerous work. Charlie McBride. Said twelve years old. This twelve year old boy has a steady job with the Miller and Vidor Lumber Company. He takes slabs out of the chute which has a moving endless chain to carry the wood up the chute. He passes the slabs on to the other boy who saws them on an unguarded circular saw. Charlie runs the saw himself whenever he gets a chance. He is exposed, not only to the above dangers, but to the weather, no roof even. Has been here for some months. "Get four bits a day." (Fifty cents.) Works ten hours. This was the only mill that I found around Beaumont that employed boys - likely because they are located some distance out of town. Location: Beaumont, Texas.

Cartoon marked New York World shows children turning a wheel labeled "Profits on child labor."

[Whistle blows noon Opelika Cotton Mill. Smallest girl in photograph is Velma Smith a tiny little spinner with a steady job all day. I found her at home crying bitterly because her father refused to let her have any money out of the pay envelope she brought home. Mother said: "That haint no way to encourage children to work." Mother, father and several children work. Her mother admitted she worked here before 12 years old, and at Ella White Mill and one other city for about a year. Says they have no family record, but claims Velma is 12 now (which is doubtful). I saw her several times going and coming at 5:45 A.M. and noon.] Location: [Opelika, Alabama]

Mr. Smith, overseer in Wylie Mill, Chester, S.C. He will not let his children work in the mill. Says it is no place for them. Plenty of children below 12 in his mill. He said that it is a common practice all through the South for employers in cotton mills to evade the child labor law by allowing young children to help their older sisters or brothers. The name of the small child is not on the books. "That is the way we manage it." Nov. 28/08. Location: Chester, South Carolina / Photo by Lewis W. Hine.

Accident to young cotton mill worker. Giles Edmund Newsom (Photo October 23rd, 1912) while working in Sanders Spinning Mill, Bessemer City, N.C. August 21st, 1912, a piece of the machine fell on to his foot mashing his toe. This caused him to fall on to a spinning machine and his hand went into the unprotected gearing, crushing and tearing out two fingers. He told the Attorney he was 11 years old when it happened. His parents are now trying to make him 13 years old. The school census taken at the time of the accident makes him12 years (parents' statement) and school records say the same. His school teacher thinks he is 12. His brother (see photo 3071) is not yet 11 years old. Both of the boys worked in the mill several months before the accident. His father, (R.L. Newsom) tried to compromise with the Company when he found the boy would receive the money and not the parents. The mother tried to blame the boys for getting jobs on their own hook, but she let them work several months. The aunt said "Now he's jes got to where he could be of some help to his ma an' then this happens and he can't never work no more like he oughter." Location: Bessemer City, North Carolina.
