Noon hour at Massachusetts Mill, Lindale, Ga. During the days following this, I proved the ages of nearly a dozen of these children, by gaining access to Family Records, Insurance papers, and through conversations with the children and parents, and found these that I could prove to be working now, or during the past year, at 10 and 11 years of age, some of them having begun before they were ten. Further search would reveal dozens or more. (See Hine Report). Lindale, Georgia

[9 year old cash girl in Gafer Department store. At first glance the home conditions with a one-armed father and several children in the family would indicate that her small wages were needed, but when we found that the father is able to do certain kinds of work, and that they have relatives who are well-to-do, there was no doubt that the family could get along without her working. In almost all the cases investigated, the need for the child's earning was very small.] Location: [Mobile, Alabama]

Learning to Keep House. These Belgian children have no homes in which to learn housekeeping but they are learning domestic art in their dormitory of the Ypres school colony, which has been established with aid sent by the Amer. Red Cross members. The dormitory is as spotlessly clean as though the little housekeepers had lived among all the comforts which American children know. They are some of the 350 children who were gathered in the colony by the Red Cross because they have no homes in which to stay during the bitter winter. While their parents are living in damp cellars and dugouts, the children are kept as comfortable as possible

The children received 20 cents for stringing a thousand tage i.e. tags they tie a knot in a piece of string, and run the string thru sic the tag. They moisten the ends of their fingers in their mouths to tie the knots. They can string about a thousand tags in half an hour. One member of a second family which is stringing tags has impetigo, or skin disease, according to the school nurse. Location: Newark, New Jersey
