"Chowderhead" in spotlight. Washington, D.C. Sept. 23. A highlight at today's hearing of the Senate Civil Liberties Committee investigating espionage in labor relations was furnished by S. Cohen, alias "Chowderhead," who testified he had been in the strikebreaking business for 20 years. After admitting that he would work for any agency that would pay his price, Cohen further testified that he "bossed the job during the New York elevator strike and since then has been on the Remington-Rand strike in Connecticut. Cohen's police record, introduced into the proceedings, showed 14 arrests and five convictions including punishment for receiving stolen goods and grand larceny

Before Senate Civil Liberties Committee. Washington, D.C., April 15. Testifying before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today, George S. Ward, Secretary of the Harlan County, Ky., Coal Operators Association, said his organiziation had doubled its assessment on member coal companies three times in the past four years during periods of union mine organization drives. The annual income for the organization from company members is between $60,000 and $70,000 and is derived from an ordinary assessment of 1/2 cent per ton levied on coal produced, 4/15/1937

A bloody bullet-torn undershirt was displayed to the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today by Thomas Ferguson, coal miner union Representative, to suport his story of having been shot last January by Harland County deputy sheriffs. He admitted that he could not identify the group of deputies who fired the shots, one of which was soft-nosed bullet that entered his shoulder and came out in the back. The Committee is investigating labor practices in "Bloody" Harlan County, Ky., coal regions, 4/27/1937

Davidson (left), Secretary of the International Association of Machinists and Mayor of Alexandria, Virginia, who told the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today that the Pinkerton Detective Agency sought to sell it's service to the Committee to Investigate Other Labor Espionage Agencies. Davidson also said that Samuel X. Brady, of Pinkerton Agency, had contacted him (Davidson) in regard to acting as a go between. In the center is William D. Whitney, Councel for the Pinkerton's, who informed the committee that his agency would refuse to disclose the requested names of undercover agents. On the right is Robert F. When the Union forces made their triumphal entry into Washington at the close of the Civil War 65 years ago, Orlando Learned could not come because of a battle wound. But at last the Union veteran has been able to make a trip to the Capital, bringing with him his cherished 36-starred Union flag, which he obtained during a celebration of the fall of Vicksburg and later carried in into battle with him. Civil War Veterans active as House doorkeepers. Washington, D.C. May 28. William H. Young, 95, and Colonel John T.
