New register of the Treasury. Washington, D.C., Sept. 2. Dr. Edward G. Dolan of Manchester, Conn. took the oath of office today as register of the Treasury succeeding the late W.W. Durbin. He is congratulated by Stephen B. Gibbons, Asst. Sec. of the Treasury, Center, and Postmaster General James A. Farley, right. Dr. Dolan was collector of Internal Revenue for the District of Connecticut from August 1934 to June 1935, was Chairman of the State Board of the N.R.A. and has been a member of the National Advisory Board of the W.P.A. until his recent resignation.

$2,500,000 in rare books acquired for Folger Library. Washington, D.C., May 14. The Folger Shakespeare Library, here, will soon place on it's shelves 9,000 volumes, onced valued at $2,500,000 and containing 787 books by early English authors, only one copy of each of which is known to exist. The 9,000 books were printed in England up to the end of 1640, roughly from the reign of Henry the 8th to the Cromwell Revolt, a period preceding and following Shakespeare. They deal largely with historical and religious subjects. The books were purchased from Lady Harmsworth, widow of the collector by President Stanley King, of Amherst College, the trustees of which administer the Folger Library. Dr. Giles E. Famous gems that are worth a king's ransom were displayed at a private showing at the Grace Dodge Hotel in Washington this week by Miss Harriet Keith Fobes, noted gem collector of New York. It was from Miss Fobe's wonderful collection that Mrs. Coolidge received her first inaugural present in 1924, the lovely crystal and silver necklace given her by Mrs William M. Butler, whose husband was then chairman of the Republican National Committee

Wideman, Assistant Attorney General in the Tax Division, will represent the government in the first case to go before the Supreme Court in the new building, and he holds the honor of arguing the last case to be heard in the old Supreme Court quarters. He has won 10 out of his last 11 cases. He represented the government, and won, in the Sandy-Fox case last session, which involved the Five Civilized Indian Tribes vis the United States. He will defend the government in the Douglas-Willicutts case, in which Edward B. Douglas seeks a return of tax money from Levi M. Willicutts, Collector of Internal Revenue, 10/4/35

Mrs. Edness Wilkens, Secretary to Nellie Tayloe Ross, Director of the Mint, for the last four years has been collecting coins as a hobby, thru gifts, trades, and buys, she has a collection of over 400 coins ramping from half pennies to the old silver cartwheels, she is shown inspecting a half-dime , one of the first coins struck from the Philadelphia Mint in 1792, and Mint tradition has it that the silver it contains is from the tableware of Martha Washington, she at that time lived two doors down from the Mint, and gave part of her silverware for the first coins, April 11, 1938
