The "East Side" of Pocahontas Country. The Aldrich home, - Buckeye, near Marlinton, West Virginia. This is one of the worst homes in the county. Howard Hughes speaking before the Press Club. Washington, D.C., July 21. Howard Hughes, speaking at the National Press Club today, before hundreds of government officials and representatives of foreign governments. Hughes today envisioned a future in aviation when giant flying boats, almost as large as modern ocean liners, will fly the Atlantic under conditions in which the element of luck will play no part, speaking at the luncheon in his honor, he described in detail the type of flying craft and equipment he believes the future will see but which is now nothing more than an aeronautical engineers dream, 7/21/38

Foods such as these--turnips, pumpkins, onions, potatoes, apples, pears--can be kept for several months if stored right. The best type of storage depends upon the climate, the soil conditions, and the materials you have to work with. 9 year old cash girl in Gafer Department store. At first glance the home conditions with a one-armed father and several children in the family would indicate that her small wages were needed, but when we found that the father is able to do certain kinds of work, and that they have relatives who are well-to-do, there was no doubt that the family could get along without her working. In almost all the cases investigated, the need for the child's earning was very small. Location: Mobile, Alabama.

Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. Living conditions were so crowded in Erie, Pennsylvania, that a defense worker and his family of three were found to be living in this attic room. One of the defense industries there, which holds large contracts for the Navy, expects an increase of 4,000 workers during the coming year. Practically all vacancies are already taken, and even the contemplated construction of new homes will fill only a fraction of the need. Realizing the urgency of this need, the Division of Defense Housing has programmed 300 homes in this area, 60 of which are already completed (July 1941). In the meantime, trailers are being used by the Division as a temporary expedient until the more permanent homes are completed

Agriculture. Guayule cultivation. Guayule shrub in blossom. If growing conditions are good, the plant is a prolific seeder and the seeds have relatively high visability. Guayule plantings will produce a estimated 600 tons of rubber in 1943, provide a crop in 1944 which should yield 33,000 tons and a harvest in 1945 to yield 47,000 tons. An annual production of 70,000 tons to 80,000 tons will materialize if full capacity of nurseries now being built is utilized. Addition: This program is part of the Department of Agriculture's Emergency Rubber Project administered by the Forest Service under congressional authorization "to make available a source of crude rubber for emergency and defense uses"

New 'Mosquito Boat' ready for action. Washington, D.C., June 19. The PT-9, first of the American Motor Torpedo Boats to be delivered to the U.S. Navy under the President's $15,000,000 experimental small craft program had a preview showing for the press today. The 'Mosquito Boat' and eight other ones will be based at the naval operating base, Norfolk, Virginia, where they will undergo service tests under various sea conditions to determine their capabilities and limitations. This is the same type of boat that the government is in the process of releasing to the British Navy. Chairman David L. Walsh of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee expressed indignation over the Navy's action in this respect in view of the fact that this government is trying to build up its own sea power
