Large glass panels permit observation by visitors and view of plant by control room operators. CCC steps out in new uniform. Washington, D.C., Feb. 1. Members of the Civilian Conservation Corps today stepped out in a new uniform of spruce green. The new uniform worn by Frank Papuga, right, is quite a contrast from the old one of olive drab pictured on Robert Alesandri. Fontana Dam in the mountains of North Carolina, famous for their scenery, will be one of the biggest of the Authority's projects, being over 500 feet tall. (As it is under construction, no photographs are available but a general perspective view is attached in two copies, one of the prints being glossy but the other having better contrast for reproduction.) The downstream face of the powerhouse is developed in part as a gigantic show window. Considerable recreational and tourist development is expected for the vicinity, the Smoky Mountains National Park being next-door neighbor of the project. Visitors will be reveived at the upper level in a small structure marked by the flagpole towrd the right, from where a steep cogwheel car, used also by the operators and for the transportation of minor items, will give access to the powerhouse

Sulak family, frugal Bohemian farmers own an eighty acre farm near West. Will raise twenty bales of cotton this year. These are all members of family. The five year old picks cotton some. The seven year old picks one hundred pounds a day. The nine year old picks about a hundred pounds. The eleven year old two hundred pounds, thirteen year old two hundred and fifty pounds. The adults pick three or four hundred a day. Note the care they take of the children and of the home. (It was the end of a week and a sort of holiday, but the whole situation shows how much better standard the farm owners keep than do the "renters". See Hine report. Contrast with this photo some of those of the "renters."[)]. Location: West, Texas.

The old and new in maps. Quite a contrast between the modern map in the background and the powder horn map being held by Miss Betty Jones at the Library of Congress. The horn maps, made from the horns of bullocks, were so much used in early Colonial Wars, 1739 to 1760, and during the Revolutionary War, that they were a necessary part in military equipment. They are considered the earliest American road maps, since they related principally to inland parts of the country, the skillful engraving showing New York, Quebec, and other early cities, and the trails leading to them. They also carried the British coat of arms and the name of the owner: In Colonial days the powder horn maps were given as prizes instead of silver loving cups as of today, and they were handed down from one generation to another as heirlooms. 11/17/30

Chickamauga Dam and powerhouse. Main control room and partial view of balcony in front of it (compare with end wall in K 2304). Large glass panels permit observation by visitors and view of plant by control room operators. Ceiling of control room is assymmetric barrel vault with acoustic tile surface; all light is indirect from reflectors above low soffit along front of room. In more recent installations, control equipment is gray instead of black to reduce eye fatigue by lessening contrast

Safe clothes for women workers. Illustrating what the well-dressed women in search of a war job should NOT wear, pretty Eunice Kimball, Bendix Aviation worker, pauses at the entrance to the plant employment office where potential workers are interviewed. Though clothes may not make the woman, they ARE an indication of qualifications for a job, and Eunice's sweater, high-heeled and open-toed slippers, jewelry and loose hair-do are not improving her chances of employment. To contrast the inappropriateness of her costume, note trimly-dressed Alice Tripp, Bendix guard. Bendix Aviation Plant, Brooklyn, New York

Wartime conservation through home sewing is demonstrated by Powers model Cynthia Hope who works with a fabric-saving dress pattern. All patterns are now adjusted to WPB (War Production Board) conservation rules. Average saving: 1/8 yard per dress. Cynthia cuts the top of her contrast dress with a remnant which would otherwise be wasted. Utilizing remnants saves tremendous yardage, gets smart results
