A family working in the Tifton (Ga.) Cotton Mill. Mrs. A.J. young works in mill and at home. Nell (oldest girl) alternates in mill with mother. Mammy (next girl) runs 2 sides. Mary (next) runs 1 1/2 sides. Elic (oldest boy) works regularly. Eddie (next girl) helps in mill, sticks on bobbins. Four smallest children not working yet. The mother said she earns $4.50 a week and all the children earn $4.50 a week. Husband died and left her with 11 children. 2 of them went off and got married. The family left the farm 2 years ago to work in the mill. January 22, 1909.  Location: Tifton, Georgia.

John Huggins. Said he is fourteen years old and has been doffing for eight months in the Guadalupe Valley Cotton Mills. Violation of law. Gets a dollar a day now. Before he came here, he worked in the cotton mill at West, Tex., for five or six years. Said boys work in the Cuero mill under age. "They don't even bother to ask your age. Didn't ask mine. Easy 'nuff to git a job." The mills were not running on account of floods this week. I found only one other boy under age, "Spider" Estes said he is fourteen years old and been working here, doffing one year.  Location: Cuero, Texas.

Mrs. Dora Stainers, 562 1/2 Decatur St. 39 years old. Began spinning in an Atlanta mill at 7 years, and is in this mill work for 32 years. Only 4 days of schooling in her life. Began at 20 cents a day. The most she ever made was $1.75 a day & now she is earning $1 a day when she works. She is looking for a job. Her little girl Lilie is the same age she was when she started work, but the mother says, "I ain't goin to put her to work if I can help it. I'm goin' to give her as much education as I can so she can do better than I did." Mrs. Stainers is a woman of exceptional ability considering her training. In contrast to her is formed [?] another woman (this name was withheld) who has been working in Atlanta mills for 10 yrs. She began at 10 yrs. of age, married at 12, broke down, and may never be able to work again. Her mother went to work in the cotton mill very young.  Location: Atlanta, Georgia.

A product of the cotton mill. Frank Barnes, Box 463, Phoenix, Alabama. Been working over forty years in the cotton mills of Columbus, Ga. Started at 4 years old for 20 cents a day. Now getting $2. and is getting ready to be replaced by younger man. An ardent Socialist which has made him trouble here. Says, "I had to put one of my girls into the Mill when she was 9 yrs old, or steal. Why don't they give us enough wages to support our families? They don't intend to do that." Some of smaller "hands" on the night shift waiting for the whistle to blow. Whitnel N.C. Cotton Mill. The smallest boy and girl were about 50 inches high. One of the medium sized boys has doffed 4 years,--some at night. Get 60 cents a night. Smallest girl looked 10 years old. Been in mill 2 years. 1/2 year at night. Runs 8 sides part of the time. Flashlight photos of 5 boys who work in Augusta (Ga.) cotton mill. Supt. refused to let me go through the mill so I went there at 6 P.M. and under cover of darkness got these boys as they came out. Then we went out back of the bill boards and took the photo. 3 of the smallest of there 5 boys been there 3 years. 1 other for 4 yrs. Many children in this mill.
