When they went home the next morning they were all drenched by a heavy, cold rain and had few or no wraps. Two of the smaller girls with three other sisters work on night shift and support a big, lazy father who complains he is not well enough to work. He loafs around the country store. Canteens like the one shown in this photo, were established in a dozen or more of the most destitute villages of Roumania last winter by the American Red Cross, when the morale of the country was at its lowest point on account of the wide spread misery that had been caused by the German occupation, when under orders of Field Marshall Vin Mackensen, the German troops requisitioned all the grain that could be found in the country and also took away tons of household supplies. When the Germans left and when the Bulgars and Turks-who were even more avaricious than the Germans in the matter of looting, took their departure, Roumania was left helpless. Without the American aid that was freely given, the Country could not have found strength or inclination to start on the work of reconstruction

Lafollette, Progressive of Wisconsin, is congratulated by John L. Lewis, United Mine Worker President and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the League, and Sidney Hillman (center), Secretary Treasurer. In his speech Senator Lafollette urged the league to campaign aggressively on behalf of President Roosevelt's court reorganization plan. The collection of first coins minted in America, dating back as early as 1652, was envied by coin collectors from all over the country as they attended the American Numismatic Convention here today. The collection is owned by T. James Clarke, (center) President of the American Numismatic Association, who is showing them to F.E. Hodge (Left) and C. Shirley Leachman. President William Green of the A.F. of L. discusses various phases of the Wagner $1,040,000,000 Housing Bill with Senator Robert F. Wagner (left) author of the bill, and Senator David [...] Walsh, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Education and Labor. Green appeared before the Committee today to give his endorsement of the bill. Besides believing unemployment and eliminating slums, the measure will provide low-rent housing for the workers of the country in order that their purchasing power may not be curtailed as rents rise under an "acute" housing shortage, Green told the Committee, 4/14/1937

Last Austrian Minister to lecture at Georgetown University. Washington, D.C., Sept. 20. Edgar L.G. Prochnik, whose long career as Minister of Austria to the United States came to an end when Hitler absorbed his country into the German Reich, will teach and lecture at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Commerce this term. "A man without a country" after 40 years in the diplomatic service, Prochnik has already terminated his service with the German Embassy here. He would not comment on the report that he would take out American citizenship papers. Prochnik is pictures with a plaque presented to him by Georgetown a few years ago, 9/20/38

U.S. Crop reporting service celebrates 75th anniversary. Washington, D.C., May 12. Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace led the leading agriculturists of the country today in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the United States Crop Reporting Service. Inaugurated by Isaac Newton, first commissioner of U.S. Agriculture, in May 1863 and based on reports from less that 2000 crop correspondents, the U.S. Crop Reporting service has grown until now it numbers more than 200,000 crop and livestock reporters, supplying information monthly or oftener to the board.
