In spotlight at CIO-A.F. of L. peace meeting. Washington, D.C., Oct. 26. Leaving the CIO-AF of L peace meeting at the Willard Hotel today these three CIO leaders told newsmen that proposals of the Committee for Industrial Organization caused a sensation when offered at the confab. Under the terms the CIO offered to return to the American Federation of Labor as an independent, a situation that which would probably result in the CIO becoming the dominant wing of the American Labor Movement. Joseph Curran, President of the National Maritime Union, was brought into the Nation's labor spotlight this week when he demanded the ouster of Joseph P. Kennedy, Chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission, and Dan. S. Ring, of the Commissions Personnel Division. President of Maritime union appears before senate committee. Washington, D.C., Dec. 14. Joseph Curran, President of the National Maritime Union. Photographed while appearing before a senate committee on Maritime affairs, while Curran testified that, "compulsory" use of mediation should be delayed until labor in the industry is thoroughly organized. The National Maritime Union which was created last May by a group that quit the International Seamens Union in protest against its leadership, has voted to affiliate with the CIO last night. The decision was reached after a poll of more than 20,000 unlicensed seamen who are members. 12/14/37

This boy, Irvan Stevans, and the other (see 828) were the only whites working with a large number of negroes that day, and bad language was abundant. Says he works from "sunup to sundown" and has been working 3 summers. [On card with captions for both #827 and #828: Norris Lovitt. Been picking for 3 years in berry fields near Baltimore, Md. Bantam, Connecticut. A bale of kapok a week is the normal consumption of the Warren McArthur upholstery shop. Here Harold Curran is loosening fresh kapok from the bale. The filler machine into whose funnel he drops the kapok blows it into the bag behind him. Curran, whose main outside interest is amatuer theatricals, studied for a year at Manhattan College, then worked for B. Altman and Bloomingdale's, large department stores in New York City. He also traveled for some months for the U.S. Department of Agriculture
