View of the Gorenflo Canning Co., Biloxi, Miss. Taken at 7 A.M. Many tiny workers here, some of whom began to arrive as early as 5 o'clock, and [sic] hour before they were allowed to begin work, and long before daylight on a damp, foggy day. The whistle had blown and they came and stood around merely to hold their places. When the "catch" has been good they begin work early, but today it was not good so they were waiting for daylight. In this group I ascertained the ages of a few, as follows, 1 child of 6 years, 1 of 7, 2 of 8, 1 of 10, and there were many others. See report also. Location: Biloxi, Mississippi.

In Memphis, Tennessee hundreds of colored laborers congregated near the bridge every morning at daylight in hopes of work chopping cotton on a plantation. They are hauled to and from work on trucks. Reduced cotton acreage has made employment scarce for this class of seasonal labor in all towns. "You can't live the commonest way on six bits a day. Not alone nor no way. A man like me can't get no foothold. It's a mighty tough old go. The people here in the morning are hungry, raggedy, but they don't make no hungry march"

Color expert for Uncle Sam. Washington, D.C., June 20. When it was discovered that color plays an important [role] in marketing of cotton, Miss Dorothy Nickerson, Color Technologist of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, developed a method for measuring the color of raw cotton mechanically. The equipment comprises a comparator, a motor on which to spin standard color discs, the color discs, and standard artificial daylight. When looking through the comparator, the operator sees a circular field, the upper half made up of the color of the cotton and the lower half made up of the disc colors, 6/20/38

Royal Air Force Bostons in daylight raid on Saint Malo. Boston bomber, escorted by fighters, on July 31 carried out successful attack in daylight on harbour works and installations at Saint Malo, and returned with photographs providing evidence that their bombs were well in the target area. At least sixteen bombursts can be seen in and around the bassin Dunguay Trouin, eleven in, or adjecent to, a builders' yard. Of the bursts in the bassin itself, one is a near miss on a 300 foot motor vessel, another a near miss on three barges on the opposite side of the bassin, and a third is either on the stern or on the quay alongside a motor vessel of 250-300 feet
