Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. The entire framework, including sections for doors and windows, is fabricated horizontally. The crew working here will later move to another site and repeat the procedure. This circulation of crews who are experienced in one type of construction adds to the speed with which defense homes are being built. Two crews of forty men each are used to raise the stud frames of a four-unit defense home. On the project shown here, one crew started the framework at 8:30am, fabricating it horizontally, and finished it at noon. The other crew moved in shortly after, erected the stud frame, ends, and floor joists, and finished the entire framework by 4:30pm the same day

Bantam, Connecticut. Defense homes. Little Ann Heath is eager to try out all the facilities of her parents' new four-room defense housing unit, after spending most of her life in a single furnished room. Here she pushes her footstool to the sink in order to help her mother clean up the dinner dishes. Mrs. Heath, a native of Winsted, a city some twenty-five miles away, is delighted with her new kitchen--the first she's ever had which she actually considers as a kitchen, and is trying out all the recipes she has collected in five years of married life. The Heaths pay thirty dollars monthly for their apartment

Bantam, Connecticut. Defense homes. The heating unit is in the kitchen of Fred Heath's four-room apartment in the new federally-financed homes for eighty families just a few minutes from the Warren McArthur factory in Bantam. The well-insulated coal fire puts steam in the radiators and provides the heat for cooking. The tenants are well-pleased although on several nights when the temperature dropped to ten degrees below zero they were forced to replenish the fuel every two or three hours. That cigarette Fred Heath holds is not tailor-made, by the way--he likes to roll his own
