Began at 35 cents a day, now makes 50 cents. Their family bible gave his birthday June 25, 1901, making him 10 years old. Small boy on left end Emmett Capps been doffing one year. All work in Ewen Breaker, Pennsylvania Coal Co. (see photos taken at breaker later). Philip Kurato (on left end of photo) 177 So. Main St., Pittston, Pennsylvania Working in breaker for 6 months, said he was 12 years old, but doesn't appear to be that. Told the school Principal the other day he was 13 years old. Jo Tabone (middle) 141 Thompkin St., benn [i.e., been] working three years in Ewen Breaker. Said 14 years old but doesn't appear to be. Charlie Bootha (right-end) said he was 12 years old. Works at Ewen Breaker. Lives in Sebastopol. Couldn't spell his own name and didn't know name of street he lives on. Seems to be under 12 years old. All were suspicious of my sending them to school. Philip Kurato's step-mother told me (through an interpreter) that he has a birth certificate showing him to be 13 years old; that he has been working in the breaker for two years - and that Squire Barrett gave him his working papers. The little girl apparently not 12 years old couldn't write her name. The next to the smallest boy doesn't appear to be 12 years makes 50 cents a day sweeping. 3 others not in the photo, work. C.N. Roberts who owns his own farm near Roseville, brought his cotton to the Lassiter gin in Knightdale, Wake County, North Carolina. This gin which is operated by Mr. Faison has ginned only two hundred and fifty bales of cotton this season and doesn't expect much more. The boll weevil got most of the cotton in that section. Because of the tobacco market holiday all the picking and ginning of cotton was finished very early this year

An old man who has lived all of his life near Broadway, New York City, and who was taken off relief and sent to the Elba FSA camp to work in the harvest. He said, "There is so much suffering in the world today that mine doesn't seem so much and I'm doing my best to help bring in Uncle Sam's crops"

Going back to work. Youngest boy is Richard Millsap. The family record in bible says he is 11 years old - born Jan 22, 1903 (doubtful), and father says 12 years old. He appears to be under 9. Works every day at spinning, and has been working for some weeks. Boss saw investigator photographing him and whistled to him to get out. This photograph was gotten as he went in to work. Then boss took him off his regular job and put him helping others. Mother was furious at boss for not giving Richard and sister (a little older) more steady work. "He keeps changin em around and helpin others. I'll tell him that if he doesn't give em plenty of work there is plenty of mills that will." Father and mother both well and able to support family.  Location: Opelika, Alabama.

In 1913 parents refused to let child be committed to Wrentham, Massachusetts. In 1916 father came to office asking that boy be committed as he spent all his time on the dumps. Deficient mentality. Neck covered with scars and boils. "No work - no school" since 1912. Never cleans up. Doesn't go home to meals. Eats from dump and steals from dinner pails. Hard for him to tell where he lives. Thought 92 Oak Grove Ave. Was in baby grade at Ruggles School and was expelled. "Is father alive?" "No, he's a milkman." Fall River, Massachusetts. 6/22/16. (Branch of St. Louis firm.) Peter's Shoe Co. Boy on left end is Harry Chrystal, (Add. Box #9, De Soto) an inveterate smoker. He is a "brusher," gets $3 a week; has worked one summer; is on now "for the winter." Said, after hesitation, when I asked age, "I'm fourteen." Doesn't appear to be. Boy in middle and right end boy seem to be under 14. They are Walter Johnson and Eugene Rieser, and claim to be regular workers. Walter said he had just been "fired" and Eugene had "got mad and quit."  Location: De Soto, Missouri.

C.N. Roberts who owns his own farm near Roseville, brought his cotton to the Lassiter gin in Knightdale, Wake County, North Carolina. This gin which is operated by Mr. Faison has ginned only two hundred and fifty bales of cotton this season and doesn't expect much more. The boll weevil got most of the cotton in that section. Because of the tobacco market holiday all the picking and ginning of cotton was finished very early this year

Well, that's what it is, a pile of limestone, but since limestone is the main ingredient for the refining of high quality steels, heaps of rock such as these are mighty important factors in the maintenace of defense production. [Going back to work. Youngest boy is Richard Millsap. The family record in bible says he is 11 years old - born Jan 22, 1903 (doubtful), and father says 12 years old. He appears to be under 9. Works every day at spinning, and has been working for some weeks. Boss saw investigator photographing him and whistled to him to get out. This photograph was gotten as he went in to work. Then boss took him off his regular job and put him helping others. Mother was furious at boss for not giving Richard and sister (a little older) more steady work. "He keeps changin em around and helpin others. I'll tell him that if he doesn't give em plenty of work there is plenty of mills that will." Father and mother both well and able to support family.]  Location: Opelika, Alabama.
