Greeting the returned doughboys. Hardly a day passes without the arrival at Newport News, Virginia of a transport bearing another part of America's victorious troops on their way home. And when ever the ship comes in the indefatigable American Red Cross workers are on hand to greet the doughboys with tobacco, chocolate and numerous other creature comforts and extend many other forms of service

This RC outpost is only three miles behind the new lines in the St. Mihiel salient. It was formerly a German motion picture hall, as the sign over the doorway above the Red Cross sign indicates. 150 German prisoners were taken from it the American advance. The doughboys are now playing the German piano imported from Metz and the Red Cross is preparing to operate the motion picture machine found in the place. More than ten thousand men are fed and given comforts at this place every day. The doughboys in the picture were caught by the camera as they emerged from the place with cigarettes, chocolate and magazine

These doughboys have just come out of a Red Cross dugout near the new front lines in the St. Mahiel salient. They have their hands full of doughnuts, cigarettes and magazines. This outpost outfit followed a few miles behind the doughboys in their recent advance. When the American infantrymen dug in, the Red Cross dug in also under a ruined house, started their fires, and within a few hours were serving thousands of weary but enthusiastic Americans with hot drinks and other comforts

"It's a Gift," says the smiling yank. Doughboys detached for service with the American Red Cross helped distribute shoes to the half million Russian prisoners unable to leave German internment camps. This picture was taken at the Cassel camp as a doughboy was handing a pair of real leather boots to an old Cossack veteran. Note the American smile and the Russian expression of seriousness
