Takes oath as first Assistant Interior Secretary. Washington, D.C., April 8. His nomination finally approved by the Senate after three month's consideration of his fitness for the post, Ebert K. Burlew was today sworn in as first Assistant Secretary of Interior to succeed the late Theodore A. Walters of Idaho. PWA ready for recovery gun--Ickes. Washington, D.C., April 26. Secretary Ickes today told the House Appropriations Sub-Committee in hearing on President Roosevelt's recovery program that the PWA has 2,714 approved public works projects which could be started within "60 to 90" days. Ickes statement was disclosed to newsmen by Rep. Clifton Woodrum, Chairman of the Sub-Committee. While he refused to make a statement, Ickes did say he had no objections to making PWA permanent as proposed in a bill by Rep. Alfred Beiter. In the group, left to right: (seated) Rep. J. Ickes denies wire tapping by his investigators. Washington, D.C., Jan. 11. Secretary of the Interior Ickes denied before the Senate Public Lands Committee that this department investigators had tapped telephone wires of any Senator or Representative. Ickes, testifying on behalf of Ebert K. Burlew, nominee for Asst. Sec. of the Interior, was questioned by Sen. Key Pittman of Nevada in regard to "rumors" of a secret investigation of an unidentified Congressman. "It is not true, and it has never been true as far as I know" Ickes said. Glavis, former Interior Department Investigator, today described to the Senate Public Lands Committee how wire-tapping of department telephones was carried on after he discussed leakage of information with Secretary Ickes. He denied that White House wires had been tapped and President Roosevelt demanded such tapping cease. Glavis was summoned before the committee to be questioned on the qualifications of Ebert K.
