Remains of an old structure in the Terilingua "ghost town," some of which is still occupied and some of which consists of ruins of the Chisos quicksilver-mining company, which operated from 1905 into the early 1940s, and the residences of those who worked there. (Quicksilver is a now little-unused term for the liquid metal mercury.) A Web site for the town speaks of "scenic downtown Terlingua, Texas, just a few exits past the end of the world." Cabin and a few farm implements in South Pass City, a mining boomtown of 2,000 people in the 1860s in what is now Fremont County, Wyoming, that by 1949 was a ghost town. Over time miners, speculators, and businessmen, finding little gold and suffering in the region's winter blizzards and unrelenting summer heat, abandoned the town, which is named for the surrounding valley that proved the most reliable route through the Rocky Mountains for emigrants on the Oregon, Mormon, and California trails. Now a historic site, South Pass City once again has (in 2016) a few hardy residents

Old degenerating structure that later apparently served some artistic purpose in Atlantic City; not the famous New Jersey resort for sure, but close to a ghost town in remote Fremont County, Wyoming. The town is a small mining settlement in a gulch near South Pass, the famous route through the Rockies for Oregon and Mormon Trail emigrants. It was founded as a mining camp following the 1867 gold rush in the region. The town declined following the end of the placer gold rush in the early 1870s, but continued to exist as advances in mining technology allowed further extraction of gold
