Members of the new public contracts board of the Department of Labor met today for the first time shortly after they were appointed by the Secretary Perkins. Hearings will be held immediately by the Board to make findings upon questions arrising under the Walsh-Healey law which went into effect last week and requires that manufacturers and dealers who make future contracts in excess of $10,000 with the Government shall comply with certain minimum wage, maximum hour and other labor conditions in the performance of the contract. Pope, Democrat of Idaho, has introduced a bill in the Senate to increase the Federal Government's contribution, through the Social Security Board, to care of dependent children from third the maintenance cost to one half. At present the government contributes half the cost of old age pensions and aid to the blind. The Pope proposal would bring the law with reference to dependent children in conformity to the provisions relating to other beneficiaries of the act. 6/8/37

Family from Oklahoma; have been in California for six years, have been migratory workers now on Works Progress Administration (WPA) from which they may be cut off at the opening of the 1939 harvest. Their house represents one of many similar structures, which they are attempting to construct by their own efforts on poor land, for which they are paying a few dollars a month out of the WPA budget. Their light bill is two dollars a month. Water bill one dollar a month, kerosene for cooking five dollars per month, approximately. They own a 1929 Ford. "The cheapest thing for the government to do would be to put people like me on enough land to make a living on. You can't tell me anything about running around with the fruit, I know that deal. You are lucky if you make enough to get home. I'm not a kickin', I'm being tuk care of, but if I should live to be hundred this way I'm not getting ahead noways."

Bantam, Connecticut. Bantam is hoping eventually to get a new post office and town hall. The town burgesses meet above the post office, while the rest of the second story here is given over to a little-used basketball court. Postmaster Edward M. Doyle, who is not related to James L. Doyle, the town warden, has run out of defense stamps more than once, for Bantam is buying bonds and stamps in large quantities. The volume at the post office has risen considerably in the eight years Doyle has been in charge, his own salary going from sixteen hundred to twenty-one hundred annually in that time. He's especially proud of the consistently excellent ratings his premises are given by government inspectors

Conservation. Glass gauges replacing steel. Markings are carried on a label pasted on the handle of a glass plug gauge, which replace steel gauges at the Frankford Arsenal. Markings on other gauges are produced by acid etching. Glass gauges are lighter and cheaper than steel, permit greater visibility in inspection, are not as much affected by room temperatures and heat of operators' hands, are not corroded by perspiration, need no protection against rusting, do not acquire burrs that would change the effective sizes. They can save the annual use of 250 tons of critical tool steel in government arsenals alone
