[Durward Nickerson, Western Union messenger #55. One of the by-products of messenger work. Lives in Bessemer, R.F.D. #1. Saturday night, September 26, 1914 he took investigator through the old Red Light on Ave. A, pointed out the various resorts, told him about the inmates he has known there. Only a half dozen of them were open now, and those very quietly. Durward has put in 2 years in the messenger work and shows the result of temptations open to him. He recently returned from a hobo trip through 25 states. He was not inclined to tell much about the shady side of messenger work, but one could easily see that he has been through much that he might have avoided in a profitable kind of work. 18 years old. 4 P.M. Right - Frank Pristare, 456 Sixth St. 11 years old. Work "ain't good. Sells to a half-dozen customers, and a few extras. Spends all his money. Left - Chas. Ciensola, 115 Grand St. 14 years old and been selling 6 yrs. Mother takes in washing. Smokes hard, and attends tubercular clinic. Is in opportunity class, and grades no higher than 2 B. Compare with 10 year old boy. Location: Hoboken, New Jersey.

As the steel rollers revolve, the worker slashes out a section of a size easy to handle and rolls it into an armful. He holds his razor tightly against the drum until the proper amount has rolled up, then makes a quick, diagonal slash across the drum, cutting this piece away from the milling roll, and carries it away to a nearby truck.
