After testifying of his buying activity in Alleghany Corporation stock, a Van Swerigan holding company, Whitney proposed adoption of a rule preventing exchange Governors from passing on listing of new stock in which they or their business firms have an underwriting interest. He defended past practices of exchange officials, including himself, of passing on acceptability for listing of issues in which they were persoanlly interested

Former Envoy to Germany is last witness before Senate Judiciary Committee. Washington, D.C., April 23. The hearings of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the court reorginization drew to a close today with J. Gould Schurman, former American Envoy to Germany, as one of the last witnesses to oppose the plan. The proposal would rob the court of its world wide fame and divinity, Schurman told the Committee. Final witness before profit sharing committee. Washington, D.C., Dec. 14. George P. McNear, Jr., President of the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railroad system, who was the final witness before the finance subcommittee studying profit sharing. The president of the 300-mile road told Senators Herring and Vendenberg that the government could best help railroads by leaving them alone and by giving some relief on social security taxes. New Public Contracts Board, Washington, D.C. Oct. 6. Members of the new public contracts board of the Department of Labor met today for the first time shortly after they were appointed by the Secretary Perkins. Senate Interstate Commerce Committee opens hearings today on transportation. Washington, D.C., April 3. The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee got off today for a series of hearings on public transportation problems, but the news value was considerably overshadowed by the appearance of Robert Montgomery in another committee at the same time. Carl R. Gray, Chairman of the president's committee of six on railroads, told the Committee that his group felt that an independent transportation board is needed to regulate all transportation, the board to be outside of the ICC jurisdiction. Paul Revere Sentinels appear at Senate Neutrality Hearing. Washington, D.C., May 2. A bit of color was injected today into an otherwise drab session of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations which is conducting hearings on neutrality, when a group of people, known as the Paul Revere Sentinels, appeared to state its views. A spokesman for the committee accused the press of withholding truths about the present international situation and the forces back of it, and warned the committee against allowing itself to become the mouthpiece of the Capitol. The group is opposed to allowing its children to become cannon fodder in another World War.
