The Yelverton Family. Ten in the family. Live in a six-room house, "The only one on the street," they told me repeatedly. Two years ago the came here from the farm fifty miles away and a mile from the R.R. where they owned 135 acres. Father and four oldest boys have been working in the Laurel Cotton Mills for two years. Father said, "the little girls don't work, an' we're not goin' to let 'em if we can help it. We'll send 'em to school an' make ladies out of em. I don't reckon we'll ever go back to the farm. They all like the mill work. It's light work, but not very healthy though." The boys said, "We'd ruther work in the mill, It's easier. No hot sun an' no cold in winter 'cause they heat the mill then." The two youngest boys, eleven and thirteen years old, the father said, have been in the mill two years, and have had almost no schooling, and no likelihood of getting any more. The mother said, "I don't like to live in the city near so well. We're more shut in, an' we can't give the boys the schoolin' they ought to have 'cause they've got to work in the mill (wages is so low). We haven't been so well as on the farm." National Archives. Washington, D.C., Nov. 22. Preservation of documents has long been a problem in libraries and offices of record. It was once done by a process known as 'crepelining,' which consisted in placing coarsely woven silk over and under the paper to be preserved with the use of adhesive. The most modern process now used is called the laminating process and consists in sandwiching the document between two sheets of thin, transparent cellulose acetate. This is then placed between two highly polished metal plates and subjected to heat and pressure in a hydraulic press

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Pickling lengths of copper water tube in a brass and copper mill. After annealing, or softening by heat to reduce brittleness and allow further drawing, tubes are "pickled" in a sulphuric acid solution to remove oxide and scale that result from the anneal. Bundles of the tubes are picked up by electric cranes and transported from the pickle to a rinse bath of water. The tubes are then returned to the drawbench for re-drawing down to smaller diameters. Now it is sued to help feed the starving civilian population in this district of the Balkans. The baskets heaped in the background are used to hold the kneaded dough, which is placed in the pits drawing heat from the fire-boxes, to rise. The fires are raked out and the dough is put into the fire-boxes on long planks being baked by the heat retained in the sontes. Bantam, Connecticut. Defense homes. The heating unit is in the kitchen of Fred Heath's four-room apartment in the new federally-financed homes for eighty families just a few minutes from the Warren McArthur factory in Bantam. The well-insulated coal fire puts steam in the radiators and provides the heat for cooking. The tenants are well-pleased although on several nights when the temperature dropped to ten degrees below zero they were forced to replenish the fuel every two or three hours. That cigarette Fred Heath holds is not tailor-made, by the way--he likes to roll his own

How to conserve household gas. Turning the gas as high as possible causes waste. A moderate flame will heat foods just as rapidly as a high flame. For more efficient cooking, use a pot with a flat bottom and straight sides. If the stove is equipped with different size burners, use small burners for small pots and large burners for large utensils
