Smallest member A.E.F. pickets Capitol. Washington, D.C., May 26. The world's smallest "doughboy", Nicholas Casele, of Newark, N.J., began to picket the U.S. Capitol today and announced he would continue until congress grants him a medal as compensation for his allged illegal draft into the army. Casele served more than a year overseas, fighting in seven major battles. He contends the draft law provided for a minimum height 5 feet 3 inches and 110 pounds of weight while scaled only 4 feet 10 inches and weighed only 104 pounds, 5/26/37

And fall. Washington, D.C., April 9. Weather Bureau observers stationed along the principal rivers of the United States soon will be able to follow the rise and fall of nearby river merely by picking up a telephone and dialing a given number. Preliminary trials for the last few months here show that a new automatic sound river gauge effectively and economically supplies the facts weathermen need in forecasting floods and supplying other information on river conditions for many interests. More weather bureau stations will install the new gages as fast as possible. (1)A river gauge on the Potomac River in the Capitol, where formerly a U.S. Weather Bureau Scientist had to go to this gauge box to take a reading on the river's height, all he has to do now is to pick up his telephone, dial the number of Potomac River, listen for a gong, then a buzz and at last another buzz, and then he will know whether the river is rising or falling, 4/9/38

Agriculture. Guayule cultivation. Seedling topper at work on guayule nursery beds. This machine mows the seedlings off to a uniform height for ease in digging and packing. The tops are collected in a bin on the machine and disposed of outside of the nursery. The tops are worthless for rubber production. Guayule plantings will produce an estimated 600 tons of rubber in early 1943, provide a crop in 1944 which should yield 33,000 tons and a harvest in 1945 to yield 47,000 tons. An annual production of 70,000 tons to 80,000 tons will materialize if full capacity of nurseries now being built is utilized. Addition: This program is part of the Department of Agriculture's Emergency Rubber Project, administered by the Forest Service under congressional authorization "to make available a source of crude rubber for emergency and defense uses"

Demountable employee housing. Three-bedroom war workers' house constructed in five slices. On this project, where the houses went into an existing community in Alabama to provide housing for employees of chemical and metallurgical industries of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority), the local desire for traditional appearance was accommodated by the use of a pitched roof. Each side of the roof is hinged at the eaves and is laid down, during transport, over the ceiling to bring overall height within normal highway clearances
