The mother, Freddie (11yrs. old) and Antoinette (8 yrs. old) all work $1.50 to $2.00 a week now, "but we make $3.00 a week in summer when we can work all day and not go to school." Of a family of 7 children, all but 2 work stringing tags. The oldest child is 12. The nurse of the school which these children attend, reports that they are continually being sent home because of their dirty condition. A little fellow who looked about 6 was quite an expert. The children received 20 cents for stringing a thousand tage i.e. tags they tie a knot in a piece of string, and run the string thru sic the tag. They moisten the ends of their fingers in their mouths to tie the knots. They can string about a thousand tags in half an hour. One member of a second family which is stringing tags has impetigo, or skin disease, according to the school nurse. Location: Newark, New Jersey

I found a girl of 13 working at embroidery in a far corner of a dimly lighted room. The light came from a small gas jet which was high above the girl's head, in the center of the room. She was working on a black dress which was outlined in black pencil. For this dress elaborately embroidered, she received ninety cents. She could embroider one dress in about three or four days if she kept at it steadily. She had been working since 4 P.M., and it was the 7 P.M. She expected to stop at 10:30. Stringing wooden buttons (button moulds) in a crowded home, Williamsburg, Massachusetts. Mrs. Weeks and her children 13 years, 11 years, 7 years and her grand children 7 years, 5 years and 4 years old, all working after school, holidays, etc., stringing these button moulds. Mrs. Weeks said that the most they ever made was from $7 to $10 a month; usually less. The house was crowded up and the floor not very clean. These garters are made for Berger, 92 Spring St. 9:00 P.M., Feb. 2712. Making garters (armlets). A Jewish family and neighbors working until late at night. This happens several nights in the week when there is plenty of work, the youngest children working until 9 P.M. and the rest until 11:00 or later. Family of Adolph Weiss, 422 E. 3rd St., N.Y., Seven-year-old Sarah, next is 11 yr. old sister. Next is 13 yr. old brother. On left is seven-year-old Mary and ten-year-old Sam, and next the mother is a 12 yr. old boy. The last three are neighbors children who come in regularly to work. Family of Louis Rizzo, a laborer who works some. The wife and four children (none could speak English at all) work on feathers and make about $3.00 a week. Been in U.S. five months. Do not go to school yet. Through an interpreter they said Peter is 15, Jimmie 14, Carbo 9 and John 7 years old; but those seemed to me too high. They were working in a very dim light. The dirtiest imaginable children were pawing over the nuts, eating lunch on the table, etc. Mother had a cold, blew her nose frequently (without washing hands) and the dirty handkerchief reposed comfortably on the table and close to the nuts and nut meats. The father picks now. "No work to do at any business." (Has a cobbler's shop in the room.) They said the children didn't pick near. (Probably a temporary respite.) See 2685. She is soon to be 14 and expects to go to work in an embroidery factory. Says she worked in that factory all last summer. Nicholas, 6 yrs. old and Johnnie, 8 yrs. Old work some. So does Rosie, 11 yrs. old (not in photo) who has been sick a good deal. All together earn only 40 to 50 cents a day.
