It's an intricate operation - installing a 30-calibre machine gun in a Navy PBY plane, but not too tricky for Jesse Rhodes Waller, Corpus Christi, Texas. He's a Georgia man who's been in the Navy 5-12 years. At the Naval Air Base he sees that the flying ships are kept in tip-top shape. Waller is an aviation ordnance mate

Air raid protection. Test "alarm." This and the accompanying photo (#1955) tell graphically what can be done when civilian defense officials, police and public all co-operate to make an "alarm" successful. These pictures were made on the morning of December 15, 1941, in Times Square, New York City. The time interval between photos was exactly five minutes. Within this time, in one of the most crowded metropolitan areas in the world, it was possible to stop all traffic, and to get all persons safely indoors. Those few remaining on the street are civilian defense officers (wardens, etc.)

Thanksgiving, 1942. Turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes--nothing is too good for Uncle Sam's fighting nephews when they come home to Silver Spring, Maryland. The four Coast Guardsmen, eyes riveted on the juicy turkey, watch their father, Wayman Fincham, as he carves. Seated next to him is Mrs. Fincham and next to her is the wife of Fincham's eldest son, who is fighting overseas. Another daughter-in-law is seated between the two Coast Guardsmen at the right. The sixth and youngest of the Finchams is a Coast Guardsman in training

DeLand pool. Improvised foundry, Daytona Beach. American ingenuity is the keenest tool in the kit of the machinists turning out war weapons in Florida's pools. This is the way J.L. Clayton, Daytona Beach fireman, figured out and built a blast furnace hot enough to melt brass and aluminum. He hooked up a fuel oil barrel to the old foundry pump shown at right. The pump blasts the oil and compressed air down the pipeline into the crucible. Arthur Brown, Negro helper, has his hand on a valve that controls the air and fuel which heat the furnace

Glass gauges are lighter and cheaper than steel, permit greatly visibility in inspection, are not as much affected by room temperatures and heat of operators' hands, are not corroded by perspiration, need no protection against rusting, do not acquire burrs that would change the effective sizes.
