America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. Over hills and mountains, across broad rivers and through densely weeded regious runs what the U.S. calls the "Big Inch," the largest oil pipeline in the world, built specially to expedite supplies of oil derivatives to U.S. armed forces and the armies of the United Nations. The pipe line extends from the oil fields of the U.S. southwest state of Texas to the New York City - Philadelphia oil district of the U.S. eastern Atlantic coast, a distance of almost 1,400 miles (2240 kilometers). It is 24 inches in diameter and delivers a daily flow of 300,000 barrels. The picture shows the pipeline in the course of building. A section, before being lowered into the trench built to receive it, has been coated with hot asphalt paint. The completed pipeline cost $95,000,000

War alarm clocks. 1,700,000 of them will be produced this year to meet demand that was normally 12,000,000. Will be distributed by all pre-war alarm clock manufacturers. War alarms are of the hand-wound type, not nearly as durable as pre-war models. The case, about 6 x 6 x 2 1/2 inches, is of molded pressed wood and paper pulp. Mechanism contains only about 1/10 ounce brass and 6 1/2 ounce of steel, compared to pre-war average use in the low-priced alarm clocks of 6 and 13 ounces respectively. For this reason, and since the programmed supply for the year will barely cover the needs of workers in directly war-essential occupations, War Production Board (WPB) has requested that no one buy a war alarm unless it satisfies real need, not merely want, wish, or whim

New fathometer used at full speed. Washington, D.C., May 7. Dr. Herbert Grove Dorsey of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey has invented an instrument to secure the precise measurement. The machine sends a sound, pitched so high that it is above audibility, traveling thru the water a known speed, the sound hits the bottom and returns as an echo at 20 times per second. The fathometer is so accurate that a change in depth of three inches can be detected. the indications are made by a flash from a neon tube, viewed thru a rotating disc, the flash of light appearing to stand still and the depth is read as easily as a clock. The instrument indicator is installed in the pilot house (at the top of the machine) and the transceiver (the disc at the right of the machine [?]) is located in the hull of the ship, 5/7/1937

This Norton type C six-inch semi-automatic cylindrical grinder in a New England plant used to grind motor shafts for the firm's normal production of electric dry shavers.
