New York Board of Trade says 'nonsense' to charges on capital strike. Washington, D.C., June 3. M.L. Seidman, Chairman of the New York Board of Trade Tax Committee suggested a 10 point tax program to the House Ways and Means Committee. He brought out that business would lose its fear of striking out for recovery if it knew in advance where Congress would place taxes. He said that removal of numerous taxes and replacement of that federal income by broadening of the income tax base might be a solution. Said he, ' We hear it said that capital is on strike. But, that is sheer nonsense. What we lack is a willingness to run the risk of employment against too many odds'

Negro Marines prepare for action. Breaking a tradition of 167 years, the U.S. Marine Corps started enlisting Negroes on June 1, 1942. The first class of 1,200 Negro volunteers began their training three months later as members of the 51st Composite Defense Battalion at Montford Point, a section of the 200 square mile Marine Base, Camp Lejeune, at New River, North Carolina. Evidence of the lack of racial friction may be seen in the sports program at the camp. On the baseball team Negro enlistees and white non-com officers are teammates. Camp Lejeune has its own baseball league, with the Montford Point team a strong contender for championship honors

Tea and tomato juice cause marketing headache, consumers expert tells committee. Washington, D.C., May 11. Dr. Ruth W. Ayers, New York economist and formerly on the staff of the Consumers' Advisory Board of the defunct NRA, brought in three packages of tea and 21 cans of tomato juice to show the temporary economic committee today, and told members that deceptive sizes of cans and packages and lack of quality gradings cause housewives a good deal of shopping headache. She said that she bought all the food at retail stores yesterday, found 11 different brands and 17 sizes of tomato juice cans, with no way to determine quality except to try them all. Asking for 1 quarter lb. tea packages, she was given packages containing 1-2 oz. less than she had asked for. Even though the package was marked as to net weight. She pointed this out as being 'misleading,' even though the price may be adjusted to fit the eight

Typhus patient convalescing at the infectious diseases hospital in Brest-Litovsk. No fuel is in for winter, and there is a total lack of mattresses and blankets. The Interallied Medical Comm. sent by the League of Red Cross Societies to study the typhus situation in Poland found that the present epidemic of typhus is wide spread and fresh cases are constantly being introduced from the East by returning refugees and prisoners of war. The Polish medical authorities are taking active measures to deal with this situation but they are seriously handicapped by the lack of soap, disinfectants, drugs, bedding and clothing and hospital equipment. In its official report the Comm. states that this condition is a matter of international moment, and that united action is needed to stamp out typhus in Poland to prevent its spread to Western Europe and America

Class room in the Sahara. Going to school in the Sahara Desert is a casual routine. The school room may be any perfunctory spot that looks comfortable and "smoking is allowed." A class in Mohammedanism is conning the Koran from wooden "slates" whereon all the wisdom considered necessary in this land is carved. When they have learned it all by heart backwards and forwards their education is considered complete. Thousands of children in this part of the world are toothless from lack of dentistry and other thousands are blind from lack of hygiene and sanitary measures. Bathing their faces in polluted streams causes part of the scourge of blindness, and the hot sun and sand also cause part of it. Some of the most worthy students are to be selected from among these oriental children and "coached" for scholarships in foreign schools and colleges by the Junior Red Cross of America. It is believed that this training will help them to carry back modern ideas to their people of an importance over the wisdom of the Koran for preventing the spread of disease
